Woman Yawning

Are there medications which affect energy levels?

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could pop a pill, and it immediately gave us energy for the day? Most of us would jump at the “short cut” to full energy, especially if we live with serious problems with fatigue.

The attempts of treating fatigue with medication have failed miserably – take Modafinil and Amantadine for fatigue in multiple sclerosis. The people I work with who have MS tell me that these medications barely touch their fatigue.

If you find you have constant low energy, you need to check in with your GP to have blood tests and any investigations needed to investigate and medical reason for this. It is also worth talking to a medical professional about any medications you take which may have the side effect of causing fatigue or broken sleep. There may be alternatives with less side effects. But for others these fatigue-inducing medication may be a necessity for our life, and these are the times we need to learn to manage the fatigue and find the best quality life we can.
